Are you afraid of putting on too much weight during the holidays? Are you wondering how to do your shopping to be on a healthy diet is spite of a limited budget? Or are you interested in getting a few nutrition tips for you children to be active? Then you should check out the following resources.

Tips on staying on track during the holidays

First, it’s time to abandon that “all or nothing” mentality. A single day of indulgence won’t blow your whole year. As Scottie Rawlings pointed out, that 5- to 10-pound holiday weight gain doesn’t occur overnight. Rather, it accumulates during that period of time between Halloween and Valentine’s Day, said Rawlings, a registered dietitian and diabetes educator at Cosmopolitan International Diabetes and Endocrinology Center.

I strongly recommend this article full of many useful tips on how to survive the holiday without packing on punds.

The next article describes another topic which has become quite important – how to make sure you eat a nutritious diet even when o you are on a very limited budget.

National Hunger ‘Events’ Highlight Difficulties of Living on Less

Mary Lou Kiel, training specialist for Penn State Nutrition Links, explained that the average person needs to be educated or trained to be a better shopper.

“If you really want to eat a nutritious diet on such a limited budget, you need to put in the time looking at store advertising circulars, finding out what’s on sale, planning your meals in advance and figuring out how what you buy for one meal can be used for a second meal on day two or three,” Kiel said. “You have to stick to your plan and not be swayed by what you see in the store.”

My last pick is covering my favorite topic we should never forget – the importance of good nutrition for our kids’ health.

Five Tips for Getting Your Kids the Nutrition They Need to Be Active

We know the importance of getting our kids the proper nourishment, but sometimes it’s easier said than done. Children and teens who participate in sports have an even greater need for the proper fuel to get them through their day.

Without the right foods to fuel their bodies, not only will their athletic performance suffer, but their school work is likely to suffer as well. Here are five tips to help your children eat right, and get them started on a life time of good nutrition.

(Bellingham, WA) - Everyone knows a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing - especially when deciding what to put into your body. That's because lots of nutrition "facts" commonly stated as gospel truth are actually diet myths, and believing them can throw your diet and nutrition plans way off track.

Diet myths gain credibility partly through repetition, according to nutrition expert Gloria Tsang, RD. "I hear the same diet myths repeated over and over as fact," said Tsang, who founded online nutrition community www.HealthCastle.com in 1997.

"But these myths are just that - myths - and believing them will only sabotage your ability to make healthy diet decisions," Tsang said.

She debunked top 6 diet myths:

1. Brown sugar is better than white sugar: Myth! The brown sugar sold at grocery stores is nothing more than white sugar with added molasses.

2. Brown eggs are more nutritious than white eggs: Myth! Eggshell color has nothing to do with egg quality. It varies depending on the breed of the hen.

3. Avoiding shellfish helps lower blood cholesterol: Myth! The dietary cholesterol in seafood has little effect on blood cholesterol. Blood cholesterol is raised by eating saturated fats and trans fatty acids found in deep-fried or processed foods.

4. Cutting carbs helps you lose weight: Myth! You will lose weight at the start of a low-carb diet, but it's water weight lost by tricking your body! Real weight loss can only come from reducing calorie intake or increasing calories burned.

5. Skipping meals save calories: Myth! When you skip a meal, your body thinks you're in starvation mode and slows down the metabolism. Plus, you're likely to overeat at the next meal.

6. Red meat is bad for you: Myth! Red meat can contain saturated fat. However, chicken with skin contains more saturated fat than a lean cut of beef or pork!

Embracing diet myths won't help you lose weight or have a healthier diet. In fact, they can lead you to make bad diet decisions. Simple, nutritious eating is always the best way to lose weight and stay healthy.
Hey there! If you're reading this, you're probably already aware of the importance of a healthy diet for your children. This is essential if you want them to have a good life.

By Andrea V. Smith

Hey there! If you’re reading this, you’re probably already aware of the importance of a healthy diet for your children. This is essential if you want them to have a good life.

When your kids eat, nutrients are extracted from food. This is how their bodies turn food into energy, and energy is what they need in order to live, to do exercise, to think, and to laugh. Their organisms will let them know when they need food by sending them messages (hunger is one of those messages), and it will send them different messages when they’ve had enough food as well. That’s why it is important that they don’t go on eating when they’re not hungry.

Children and teenagers need the same nutrients that adults do, but in different amounts and proportions. Because they’re growing up, it is so important that they eat a variety of foods from each food group to ensure optimal intake of all vitamins and minerals.

You may want to keep an eye on what your children eat when they’re not at home. You should become familiar with the school menu if your child participates in the school lunch program, for example, but wouldn’t it be much better if your kids themselves cared about nutrition facts?

An old Chinese saying goes: Give a person a fish, and you feed them for a day. Teach a person how to fish, and you feed them for a lifetime. Education is stronger than vigilance. If your child becomes interested in food, he or she will never forget this basic knowledge. For this purpose, you can send them to cooking classes for kids. Then, they can help you pack lunches for school, including food that’s pleasing and fun to eat, as well as healthy, safe, and nutritious.

A well-balanced packed lunch might include a sandwich with whole wheat-bread and a lean, protein-rich filling, such as turkey chicken, tuna, egg, cheese, or peanut butter; fresh fruit and/or vegetables; low-fat or fat-free milk; and graham crackers, Jell-0, or another simple low-fat dessert. Be aware of food safety measures when packing your child’s lunch, such as keeping perishable foods well-chilled.

Many people forget about the nutritional values of foods when planning their meals. After all, it's so much easier to just stop at their favorite fast food restaurant on their way home from work.

By Jude C Wright

Many people forget about the nutritional values of foods when planning their meals. After all, it’s so much easier to just stop at their favorite fast food restaurant on their way home from work.

Everyone knows they should be eating more healthy foods, but some people aren’t quite sure where to start. Here are some things to look for when trying to plan healthier meals.

Are you eating lots of fruits and vegetables? The majority of us do not eat adequate amounts to keep us healthy. Experts recommend that we eat between 5 to 9 servings every day. That adds up to about 2 cups of fruit and 2 1/2 cups of vegetables. Choose a variety of vegetables and fruits in different colors. Dark green vegetables like spinach, for instance, contain more nutritients than lighter colored vegetables.

Are you eating grains and cereals? Besides the well-known benefits of dietary fiber, grains and cereals provide many important nutrients for your health. Whole grain breads and cereals are much preferred over refined white breads or rice.

Are you eating a wide variety of foods? They say that variety is the spice of life. In reality, it’s the basis of a healthy diet. Our bodies need food from all of the food groups to function at peak performance. These food groups consist of grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy products, meats, beans and nuts. Sorry… candy is not a food group.

Do you eat breakfast every day? Yes, it’s true: breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Eating a good breakfast will give you the energy you need to make it through the morning and help eliminate those high-fat splurges.

Do you drink plenty of water? Soda and coffee may be liquid but they do not replace the water that your body needs. We need at least 16 ounces of water each day to keep ourselves hydrated and flush out the impurities that we may have accumulated in our digestive systems.

How much fat do you eat? Dietary fat is our enemy. Even though our bodies need a certain amount of fat, most of us consume 200 to 300 percent more than we need. That’s a scary thought! So, when you are making your food choices, look at the labels to see how much fat is contained in the food item. Vegetables and fruits are naturally lower in fat than meats.

How much salt, sugar and alcohol are you eating? Here again, moderation is the key. Serious problems can occur when you overdo. Salt can lead to water retention, weight gain and heart problems. Sugar, when eaten in large quantities over a long period of time can contribute to diabetes. And, excessive alcohol consumption is bad for the kidneys.

Your body will tell you when you are not getting (or when you are getting too much) of a certain kind of food. If you are gaining weight, you know you are either eating portions that are too large or you are eating foods that are high in fat. Feeling tired can mean that you’re not getting the nutrients from the foods required by your body to function.

Eating healthy foods is not as difficult as it sounds. In a nutshell: drink more water, eat less fats and sugars, and eat more fruits, vegetables and grains.
